Insert the leg with the longer taper into the root gap until it contacts both sides of the gap. 3. Retighten the locking screw, remove the gauge, and read the measurement. 4. The scale is calibrated in fractional dimensions from 1/32 to 3/16 inches in 1/16 inch increments; the reading you get represents the size of the root gap. Loosen the locking screw. push the gauge legs past the cylinder. 2. Insert the legs (wired) into the root gap or the two pipe sections to be fitted, rotate the gauge 90 degrees, being sure to apply constant back pressure to the cylinder. 3. Hold the gauge as perpendicular as possible to the fitting to get an accurate reading. retighten the locking screw. reverse the 90-degree turn and remove the gauge, you are now ready to read the increment opposite. 4. When the adjustment is aligned with the 1/32 increment line, you have a good internal fitment and assembly. Misalignment can be determined from the zero line by the increment markings of 1/16 inch.
