SAMe plays a role in the transfer of sulfur in the body and is converted, via the methionine cycle, to cysteine, which can be converted back into glutathione or taurine. SAMe also plays a role in the formation of creatine, which is important for athletes. Melatonin requires SAMe as a methyl donor. As we age, our own ability to create SAMe decreases. We cannot obtain SAMe from our diet. The amino acid methionine can be found in the diet, but it is a less efficient way to supplement SAMe. Sometimes SAMe production is deficient and decreases with increasing age. Therefore, supplementing this substance with a dietary supplement can provide a solution.
